Ouch! Prices are Really Going Up at the Grocery Store.

I make a weekly meal plan, use coupons and shop the sales in order to get the most bang for my buck on groceries. But even I am noticing the rising food prices.

Yesterday I did my weekly shopping and noticed a few things that had risen on price. My favorite grocery store, Harris Teeter, is the most expensive in the area, BUT they have the best sales. In order for me to save a lot of money I shop the sales and try not to buy anything full priced at the store. But their prices have gone from expensive, to ridiculously expensive.

Examples?

  • 1 10 count package of low-carb Mission tortillas $4.49!
  • 1 10 count package of regular Mission tortillas $3.69 (used to be $2 something)
  • Small box of Tyson chicken tenders $3.99 (used to be $3.49)

Thankfully their once pricey milk at $3.69 a gallon is now average or cheaper than other stores. Others have raised their prices to anywhere from $4-$5 for a gallon on milk (not even organic!). I’m sure any day Harris Teeter will raise the price of their milk.

Food prices have increased quite a bit over the last couple of years, but it seems in the last month or so there has been another dramatic jump in prices. There are many reasons for rising grocery costs.

Have you noticed any price increases lately? Have you changed your shopping habits because of it?

That’s out of control! I didn’t realize there was such a thing as “high carb” tortillas–I thought they all were low-carb. At least, when wrap sandwiches were really popular, that was the common belief (I think).

I buy tortillas at Aldi, where they are $0.89 for a 10-count pack. But, that’s up a dime.

My mother and I were just talking the other day about food prices… not only how they are going up but the difference in things depending on where you live.. I’m in California and she’s in Kansas. She was talking about how eggs had gone up to almost $1.50… I don’t buy eggs but the last time I looked they were around $3 at the store… Same as milk she pays about $2 a gallon where I pay $3 or more…

She sends me tuna because she can get it for .50 a can where as it’s $1 here, which is crazy considering I’m right by an ocean :) ..

On a side note : If you have a Trader Joes near you, try their tortillas… they are $1.50 and organic. They have regular or whole wheat… they are both good but I like the whole wheat the best. If not and you have a Big Lots they usually have Mission tortillas for $1.99 …
